Obituary for Bertha C. Anderson

Bertha C. Anderson
Bertha C. “Bert” Anderson, 83, of Mishawaka, died Sunday April 30, 2017 at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart. The Gary native was born February 1, 1934 to Gilbert & Dorothy (Hayn) Conway. She married John E. Anderson June 16, 1956, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage last June. Bert retired from teaching at Penn High School in 1994, and was presented the Distinguished Staff Award in 2012. The essence that led her to teaching remained within all facets of her life; in the caring and nurturing ways she always displayed with family & friends. She was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church, the Red Hats, several book clubs & bridge groups; she organized a Tai Chi group and was also the cofounder of Osceola Community Players. She enjoyed caring for her faithful friend and beloved dog, Ginger Annie. She and John reveled in continuous learning through traveling to nearly 25 Elderhostels over the years. Bert was a 13 year cancer survivor. She fought relentlessly over the years and defied all odds; always with grace, humility & a positive outlook. In addition to her husband John, Bert is also survived by their children, Kathryn (Andrew) Mehlhop of Whitestown and Eric (Tonda) Anderson of Seattle; daughter-in-law, Ruth Anderson of Carmel; grandchildren, Jacob Anderson of Beech Grove, Madeline Anderson of Carmel and Jordan & Ian Anderson, both of Seattle; her great-grandson Tovi Anderson; sister, Barbara (Stewart Schwarz) Boatright of San Marcos CA and also by Keith (Georgene) Anderson of Elmhurst IL. Bert was preceded in death by her son, David Anderson and brothers, John & Milton Conway. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 Saturday May 6, 2017 in Osceola United Methodist Church, 431 N. Beech Road, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to services. Private entombment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Arrangements through Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. The family’s preferred memorials are The Elkhart Center for Hospice Care, c/o Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka IN 46545 or to Osceola United Methodist Church.
